From the signing of the Maastricht Treaty to the 2024 reform
The European Union’s fiscal governance framework has developed progressively since the Maastricht Treaty. The rules, initially centred on deficit and debt criteria, have been supplemented and reformed several times to strengthen the coordination and surveillance of national fiscal policies.
The timeline below presents the main stages in this evolution, up to the reform of the economic governance framework that entered into force in 2024.
